Two years ago my wife Carol got tired of me waking up at three in the morning with the left knee aching, and she found a Contour Legacy knee pillow online and ordered it. Before that I slept with one of the spare bed pillows jammed between my knees, the way plenty of people with sore knees do, and before that I slept with nothing and paid for it. So when somebody asks whether the Contour is worth having over a plain bed pillow between the knees, I am not guessing or repeating a listing. I have done both, for a long stretch, in the same bed, on the same sore left knee.
Here is the short answer. A regular bed pillow is better than nothing, and the Contour is better than a regular bed pillow at one job, which is holding your knees apart and your hips level from the time you lie down until the alarm goes off. It is worse at nearly everything else. It does one thing. It costs more than the pillow you already own. If you sleep on your back it will not do a thing for you. The long version is below, and it is long because I have had two years to think about it.
What I Was Dealing With Before Either Pillow
I am 63 and retired out of the pipefitters union after 31 years of kneeling on concrete and climbing ladders, and my left knee has osteoarthritis. The orthopedist handed me that word when I was 58. The right knee had a meniscus trimmed back when I was 47 and it is the good one, most days. Nobody has told me I need a replacement and I am not scheduled for one. What I do instead is the home exercises a physical therapist showed me, a couple of swim sessions a week at the Y in St. Charles, and paying attention to how I sleep. I am not a doctor. I am a guy with a bad knee and a dog who wants two walks a day.
How I sleep turned out to matter more than I figured. I am a side sleeper, and on my side the top knee drops down and lands on the bottom knee, and by two or three in the morning that pressure has the left one sore in a way that has nothing to do with walking. I would wake up, roll over, start the night over, and be short on sleep for a dog walk I actually wanted to take. Keeping something between the knees fixes the mechanics of that. A bed pillow does it. A pillow made for the job does it better, for reasons that are mostly about shape and staying put.
What the Contour Legacy Actually Is
The Contour is a foam pillow shaped to sit between the legs. It is not a rectangular bed pillow with a nicer name. The fill is memory foam, listed as soft on the firmness scale, and the whole thing measures ten inches long by nine and a half wide, which is smaller than the pillow under your head. It weighs about seven ounces, so it does not drag the blankets down with it when you roll over. The cover is a 62/38 polyester and Lyocell blend that unzips and goes in the wash with the sheets. The foam core does not go in the machine, and I would not try it.
Two things from the listing that I can vouch for after two years. The foam is temperature regulating in the sense that it pushes heat outward instead of holding it, and I notice the difference, because a bed pillow wedged between the knees gets warm and clammy by midnight and this one does not. And it supports both legs at once because of the shape, so the top leg rests on it instead of hanging off the edge of it. Contour has been building this pillow since the early nineties. Take that however you like. I take it as a sign they got the shape right and left it alone.
| Contour Legacy | Regular bed pillow | |
|---|---|---|
| Holds its thickness until morning | Memory foam keeps the same ten by nine and a half inch shape from bedtime to alarm | Compacts under the weight of the top leg and needs re-fluffing in the dark |
| Stays between the knees | The leg shape sits in the gap and travels with you when you roll over | Slides out and ends up on the floor by two in the morning |
| Heat | Temperature regulating foam pushes warmth away from the body | Gets warm and clammy against the skin by midnight |
| Room in the bed | Nine and a half inches wide, enough to separate the knees without shoving them apart | Full size, crowds the bed, lifts the top leg higher than the hip wants |
| Nothing to buy or learn | You have to order it and give it four or five nights | You already own two of them |
| Uses beyond the knees | One job, between the legs, in bed | Head, back, propping up to read, under the knees for back sleepers |
| Cleaning | Cover unzips and washes; the foam core cannot go in the machine | Often machine washable whole, and easy to replace from the linen closet |
| Warranty | One year manufacturer warranty | No warranty listed |
| Best for | Side sleepers whose knees press together all night | Back sleepers, or anyone not yet sure a knee pillow helps |
Where the Contour Legacy Wins
The first thing is that it is the same pillow at five in the morning that it was at ten at night. Memory foam holds its shape under a leg. A bed pillow does not. Whatever a bed pillow is stuffed with compacts under the weight of the top leg within an hour or two, and then you are reaching down in the dark to bunch it back up, or you give up and let the knees press together, and the whole point is gone. In two years I have not once had to re-fluff the Contour at two in the morning. That sounds like a small thing. It is the reason I kept using it.
The second is the size. Nine and a half inches wide is enough to separate the knees and not enough to shove them apart. A full bed pillow tends to push the top leg up higher than the hip wants it, which trades a sore knee for a sore hip and a sore lower back, and it takes up half the bed besides. The third is heat, which I already mentioned, and the fourth is the cover coming off to wash, so the thing you put between your knees every night for two years is not a science project. The listing also covers sciatica, back and hip support. I can only speak to the knee and the hip, and only for me.
Where a Regular Bed Pillow Wins
Now the honest part. A bed pillow between the knees works. It is not a placebo. If you have never tried anything between your knees and you are not sure the whole idea is worth a purchase, take a pillow off the guest bed and sleep with it for a week. That is what I would tell my brother, and it is what I would tell you. You already own it. There is nothing to order, nothing to unpack, nothing to get used to. Some people find out in three nights that the position change alone was what they needed, and a folded blanket or a bed pillow is all the hardware they will ever want.
Second, a bed pillow is not a one-trick item. It goes under your head, behind your back when you are propped up reading, in a pillowcase like everything else in the house, and under your knees on a night you end up on your back. The Contour does one job and it does it in one place. On an evening when your back is acting up and you want something behind you, the Contour is not that. Cleaning is simpler too. When a bed pillow gets sour you wash it, or you throw it out and take another one out of the linen closet. With the Contour, the cover gets washed and the foam gets aired, and that is the end of your options. And if you are a back sleeper, a bed pillow under the knees is the right tool and the Contour is the wrong one.
Two years in, it is still between my knees every night
I have slept on the Contour Legacy every night for about two years. The foam has not gone flat, the cover has been through the wash more times than I can count, and it comes on overnight fishing trips. If you are a side sleeper whose knees knock together, this is the one I would hand you.

What a Normal Night Looks Like Now
Ten o'clock I go to bed, on my left side with the Contour between my knees and the right leg on top of it. Carol reads, I am out in ten minutes. Around two I roll onto my right side. The pillow comes with me because it is between the legs and the legs are doing the moving, and I do not have to wake up enough to fix it. If I get up for the bathroom, I set it back where it goes and it is still there when I come back. That is the whole routine. It is not interesting. It is the reason I stopped dreading bedtime.
The comparison I keep coming back to is the bed pillow I used first. Every night with that one went the same way: asleep by ten, knees pressed together by midnight, awake at two with the left knee complaining and the pillow on the floor. I spent a month thinking I was a bad sleeper. I was a side sleeper with a pillow that would not stay where I put it. Two years later I am still a side sleeper and I sleep through most nights. Nothing else about my routine changed in that stretch except the exercises, and those I do in the morning.
A bed pillow got me to sleep. The Contour is the reason I stopped waking up at three in the morning.
What Two Years of Nightly Use Looks Like
I have used this pillow every night for about two years, which makes it the oldest thing on my side of the bed. The foam has not gone flat or crumbly. The shape is the same as the day it came out of the box, which is more than I can say for the couch cushion I sit on during Chiefs games. The cover has been washed a lot and it has not pilled up or come apart at the zipper. The one thing I will say is that it took four or five nights before my hip stopped arguing about the height. If you try it for two nights and quit, you have not tried it.
It travels with me on overnight fishing trips to Mark Twain Lake, and it fits in a duffel without any trouble because it is small and light. The pillow does not help me get in and out of the jon boat, and it does not help me stand on the dock for three hours, which are the two things that actually hurt on a fishing day. What it does is let me sleep on a bad motel mattress after a day of that, instead of lying there with my knees grinding together.
Where It Falls Short
One job, and only one. It is not a head pillow, a back pillow, or a reading pillow, and if you want something that does all of that, buy a bed pillow. The foam core cannot be washed, only the cover, so if it ever gets soaked through, that is that. It is a purchase, where a bed pillow is free. And there is nothing on this site, this pillow included, that cures a knee. My osteoarthritis is still there. The pillow takes away the two in the morning pressure that used to wake me up, and my doctor and my physical therapist handle the rest.
What I Liked
- Holds its shape all night, so there is no re-fluffing at two in the morning
- Narrow enough to separate the knees without shoving them apart
- Temperature regulating foam does not get clammy the way a bed pillow does
- Cover unzips and washes with the sheets
- One year manufacturer warranty
- Small and light enough to pack for a trip
Where It Falls Short
- Does one job. It is not a pillow for your head, your back, or reading in bed
- The foam core cannot be machine washed, only the cover
- Back sleepers get nothing out of it
- Takes four or five nights to get used to the height
Who Should Buy Which
Buy the Contour if you sleep on your side, your knees knock together overnight, and you wake up with a sore knee or a sore hip that eases off as the morning goes on. Buy it if you have tried a bed pillow and got tired of digging it out from under the covers at two in the morning. Two years of that is why Carol ordered this one. I am not going to tell you what your hip or your sciatica needs. I am not a doctor, and the person who should be answering that is your own doctor or your physical therapist. The mechanics are simple and you can check them yourself: keep the knees apart, keep the hips level, and see whether you sleep better.
Stay with a bed pillow, or buy nothing at all, if you sleep on your back. Same answer if you want one pillow that works under your head and behind your back and between your knees, because this is not that. And if you are not sure the position change will help you, spend a week with a pillow off the guest bed first. That is a free experiment and it will tell you more than any review, mine included. If you try the Contour and after two weeks you are still throwing it out of bed in your sleep, that is your answer too. It is not for everybody, and I would rather tell you that than sell you something you will not use.
